The question
Was the evidence honest at the moment it was captured?
Proof of Capture is the claim that the evidence behind a proof faithfully represents what happened, established by structural independence at the moment of capture rather than by tamper-evidence after the fact. It names, as a claim a reader can ask for, the requirement defined in PP-SPEC-023 (Structural Independence and the Fidelity-at-Capture Requirement). This specification adds no new capture requirement; it defines how the claim is determined and recorded.
Why it matters
Cryptography proves nobody changed the record. It does not prove the record was true. A buyer, insurer or regulator relying on a proof of efficacy also needs this question answered, and answered by evidence the measured party did not produce.
What it is not
- It is not a signature, hash, or timestamp on captured data. Those prove integrity after capture, not fidelity at capture.
- It does not redefine PP-SPEC-023. Where this specification and PP-SPEC-023 differ, PP-SPEC-023 controls.
The three answers
- proven: Every Capturing Party in the run meets every PP-SPEC-023 structural independence condition, and the measured party had no means to alter the execution environment before or during capture.
- refuted: Any Capturing Party fails any PP-SPEC-023 condition.
- insufficient: The Interface Manifest or disclosed interests are incomplete for any Capturing Party.
